In this case study we'd like to highlight some of the creative uses our customers use our print and cut facility.
We typically get business customers supporting prototype work including packaging, promotional items etc, but occasionally we have some interesting projects from artists that really stand out (and we would like to share).
Case Study - Frog Tessellation by Artist Sam Wilde
Background
Tessellating frogs are a type of geometric design where identical frog shapes are arranged in a repeating pattern without any gaps or overlaps. This type of design is not only visually appealing but also showcases the precision and accuracy of laser cutting technology.
Artist Sam Wilde approached Laser Lab to support creating these frogs for an exhibition at the V & A in South Kensington in June 2025.

Materials and Processes
- 3mm Poplar plywood with a printed vinyl top layer
- Matt and chrome vinyl with additional holographic over-laminates on 'special' frogs
- Printed with ECO solvent inks CMYK.
- Design printed with registration marks on to vinyl (roll)
- Vinyl laminated to sealed plywood, then masked (to protect print surface from laser)
- Laser cut individual sheets [32 frogs each] using camera system for alignment
Sam created multiple designs and colour combinations with over a thousand unique frogs created which exhibition visitors could pattern in whichever way they wish into a large collage.

Working together we trialled multiple new materials and processing approaches to ensure a robust and repeatable tile design.
